Professional organizations in usability-sphere.

There’re several organizations that define a vector for the whole usability-community and promote user oriented design methods in industry and business.
ACM — Association for Computing Machinery
ACM — Association for Computing Machinery was founded in 1947. It’s the first organization for computing machinery. It teaches IT to professionals and students. This organization has 75 000 members. ACM is also involved in organizing and supporting special interest groups (SIG), uniting specialists, interested in a certain sphere of IT, for instance programming languages, graphics, HCI. SIG-members have access to digital library, containing recent news and articles. Moreover, SIG-membership gives discounts for attending practical seminars and conferences. Nowadays there are 34 SIG.
The closest to usability SIG is ACM SIG CHI (Computer-Human Interaction) which every year holds a conference CHI (the latest conference was held in Montreal, Canada) – the biggest and most prestigious conference in usability and HCI.
ACM portal is the key information resource for everybody, involved in practice or research in computing machinery.
Russian division of SIG GHI
The Russian division of ACM SIG CHI was founded in 2004. It currently includes approximately 30 members, who occasionally (once in 3 months) gather at seminars and discuss different topics, concerning usability and HCI. Besides, group members promote usability and teach it to everyone interested.
Usability professionals association
Usability professionals association (UPA) is an organization, uniting usability-professionals, everybody involved in promoting usability and everybody interested in studying and implementing usability.
Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
HFES — Human Factors and Ergonomics Society – was founded in 1957 (the former name «Human Factors Society of America" ). It got its present name in 1992. “The mission of our society is assistance to scientific research and exchange of knowledge about human characteristics, which can and should be used in designing all kinds of systems and devices”. This organization assists in educating everybody interested in getting a profession, connected with human factor, and everybody involved in system design. The organization contributes to exchange and broadening of knowledge about HCI. Every year the society holds conferences.
