Best 2009 intranets (according to Jacob Nielsen & Co)

We are currently looking for an intranet solution for collaboration (documents, versions control, hosted, blogs, communities, wiki). So far we have two variants: Microsoft Sharepoint Server 2007 ( Windows Sharepoint Services to be exct, which is free) and Jive SBS Express.

While searching for materials on intranet-solutions I visited Jacob Nilsen's website and found his annual report about intranet solutions.

Sharepoint - a freakin’ glorified file server

We are now choosing an ECM (Enterprise Content Management) for our company. We have wiki (on DokuWiki), file server on Samba for linux where we store documents, system of rights, intranet access through vpn and a set of scripts, which are launched from console (ssh) to create/delete users, projects etc. The time has come to get all this stuff organized. We are planning to install an ECM system and NAS (network access page).  

New useful tips for internet-forms design

I came across a very interesting article today - Label Placement in Forms. Authors share the results of a survey they conducted using equipment for tracking eye movements. During the experiment users were asked to fill in 4 forms with the same boxes but different label placement (left alignment, right alignment, label above the box and bold label above the box).

What is attention?
Attention enables us to process information about our environment. We recognize things only when we give some attention to them. Attention can be compared to flashlight, which we direct at an object to single it out. After we focused the flashlight on the object we start analyzing what we see.

In 1999 Australian Human Rights Council demanded from Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) to re-design the official Olympic Games web site because of the user, who complained that he couldn’t use the web site as he was visually impaired. SOCOG refused to re-design the site, but eventually lost the case in court and was forced to re-design it and pay 20 000$ compensation.

HCI as an independent branch of science that began to develop in late 70’s – early 80’s. It started with the recognition of problems that users of complicated and powerful systems were experiencing. Usability is based on research of communication theories, graphics, industrial design, linguistics, social sciences and cognitive psychology. This knowledge helps designers create technically efficient (i.e. enabling to solve assigned tasks) and user operable (i.e. users can solve tasks) systems.
